The Quilting Thread Choices You Have

Off hand you have three major choices: cotton quilting thread, silk quilting thread, and polyester quilting thread. Each one of these threads have their advantages and disadvantages, which you should be able to gauge before starting your quilt project. This way, you can make a decision regarding which one of them is actually the right one to choose. The choice will depend both on your style of working and preference, as much as the type of quilt you are planning to make. The quilting thread should match the character and type of the quilt to perfection.

This is the most popular choice of all because it gives an excellent look to the quilt. The best used today is the mercerized cotton thread because it has a special luster to it and is excellent for dyeing. Silk, is without doubt, the most beautiful of all the natural fibers. This is an excellent choice because this thread is strong as it is elastic. It is available in all possible colors and it is fade resistant. However, silk threads need to be washed with gentle detergents as they fade otherwise. Also, there are some activists who propose to do away with silk threads, given the horrible way in which it is obtained.

The Polyester Thread

This is a synthetic thread. There are great advantages for using this thread. It is strong, flexible, does not fade, and it looks great. In other words, it is simply perfect. To top it all these type of threads costs one fraction of what the other type threads cost.

As mentioned earlier, it will very much depend on you what type of quilting thread you choose. The only thing you should be careful on is that it should complement your quilt perfectly.
